I was working out with a friend of mine the other day and he was convinced regular situps are the fastest way to get a six pack, mainly he said because they have been promoted for years. We chatted about all these new workouts and he still insisted that regular situps are still the best way. Truth is, situps don’t really work your abs or obliques, but instead work your hip flexors.
If you notice when you are doing situps, most of the resistance is on your hips, while you do still feel some resistance on your abs, almost all of it is on your hips, which is not what you are trying to do. Crunches rather than situps are much more effective since you are concentrating on contracting your core rather than peaking the rep and focusing on the hips.
The fastest way to get a six pack is to add resistance to your training, I really can’t stress that enough. How to trainers build biceps? They curl more weight right? The same can done with any muscle group, resistance matters. I like to use either an inclined bench to do weighted crunches (very very effective) or do leg lifts with ankle weights (also recommended).
What I like to do for my ab workouts is do 4 sets of 50 repetitions whether I’m doing leg lifts or weighted crunches. For weighted crunches you can use 5 pound dumbbells or more if you can handle it, the more weight you use, the faster and more developed your abs will get, fast.
I will add that hanging leg lifts are more difficult, but they get the job done fast, especially with heavier ankle weights, I use 5 pounds on each leg, it’s more than enough but you can also add more.
A side note: if you want to shed belly fat fast, cardio is a fast way to do that, BUT with cardio you can also risk burning away precious muscle tissue, so remember to promote muscle growth by doing resistance training first and then end with cardio, that way you are telling your body not to use muscle for energy, this works great. Also be sure to consume 1g or protein per 1lb of your body weight per day, also vital for growing muscle.
If you are fully determined to get the abs you’ve always wanted and are looking for a complete how-to guide we highly recommend Mike Geary’s The Truth About Six Pack Abs, it illustrates complete workouts and outlines which foods to eat, and how major companies are abusing the fitness market with bogus products, check it out.
